November 16, 2003 FIGHT LINKROT!....Thanks to a comment from Lisa Williams (here), I learned today how to create permanent links to New York Times stories that don't disappear behind their archive wall after a few days. It's a bit klunky, but since we bloggers link to the Times frequently I thought I'd pass it along. Here's how to do it:
And what if you read the Times the semi-old fashioned way, by just scanning their website? There's no way to generate the permanent URL yourself, so if you want to link to something you've found you'll have to keep a couple of keywords in mind and then search through the appropriate RSS feed in your aggregator and look for the story there. That's a bit of a pain, but it might help wean you off your non-RSS ways and begin reading news the 21st century way. There's a silver lining to every cloud, isn't there? If you want to know more, Dave explains the whole thing here and has a bit of discussion about it here. And while we're on the topic, here's a ranking of the most archive-friendly major news organizations:
This post is dedicated to Brad DeLong. UPDATE: Corrected the information about the Washington Post. Once you link, the link seems to work forever. However, if you search for an article on their site, you can't get free access to it after about two weeks. Posted by Kevin Drum at November 16, 2003 03:56 PM | TrackBackComments
I think I speak for the blogosphere when I say: oohrah. Posted by: Anarch at November 16, 2003 04:32 PM | PERMALINKWow, this is great. The blogosphere salutes you! Posted by: Frederick at November 16, 2003 04:39 PM | PERMALINKI noticed Lisa's comment yesterday and read Winer's instructions, then I went back and read a few more items in Lisa's blog. She's a good read, and she links to interesting things. Posted by: Linkmeister at November 16, 2003 04:58 PM | PERMALINKThanks, Kevin. I'll be following that method from now on. On another very tangential note, it bothers the hell out of me that the LA Times never provides its poll questionnaires in full, like the Washington Post does. But I doubt that the blogosphere has found a solution to this problem. Posted by: Robert Tagorda at November 16, 2003 05:02 PM | PERMALINKnot worth the trouble IMO. it should suffice to name the author and
pub, the date is obviously within a limited range in almost all cases,
so anyone who wants to dig up the article should be able to do so. I believe ABC news also has linkrot safe archives, last time I checked. Posted by: OF Jay at November 16, 2003 05:36 PM | PERMALINKThank you for this entry, Mr. Drum. I am one of those people who does not like change, and I wish that links to articles and good web pages would just stay up, forever and ever. But unfortunately, things do not work like that. The Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine" has been a very, very, very, very useful and amazing tool, and it has served to relieve stress as well - over previously-lost information and broken links. (I'm one of those people that sometimes unnecessarily stresses over things like that, even if they have no major bearing on important things.) I have been very pleased with sites like that of the BBC, which actually keep their items up on the web forever and ever and ever. And CNN.com is good for that too - I think I was just thinking about that fact the other day. The PBS site also has a lot of archives, and many or most of their urls and material remains online - and that's the way it should be, since it is a publicly-funded station; if they ever decide to remove old material from their site, someone should perhaps sue. ;-) Is there some way to provide urls to New York Times pieces so that by clicking on them, the user can go to the article, even if it's one that only those who've registered at their site can view (and if that user isn't registered)? I think that Antiwar.com attacked a string of characters to the end of the urls for one or some of their links to Times pieces, but I don't know if it was for that purpose, or for other purposes. Is this feature the very type of thing that you are describing in this entry, or is this entry about something else? I think I intially assumed that this entry refers to stories that are archived by the Times after a few weeks, and are only available to those who pay a fee to purchase the articles. (If those people would just go to a college library that has Lexis-Nexis (c) on it's computers, they could probably look up any of those articles, as well as articles from countless other newspapers, and a ton of other stuff, for free.) Anyway, thanks for this information, but I don't know if I will implement it any time soon, since I am not [yet?] one who reads periodicals using RSS. I should try that soon though.
Bubba: just type "aggregator" into Google and you'll find loads of articles. Robert: yeah, I like the Post's poll vault. The LA Times seems to post the raw data sometimes, but not always. I don't know why. Markus: that won't work. Even if you find the article, you can't bring it up. You just get a message from the NYT telling you to cough up $2.95 if you want to read it. Aakash: yep, that's what I'm describing. However, I think you still have to be registered in order to view anything. Posted by: Kevin Drum at November 16, 2003 05:49 PM | PERMALINKThanks, Kevin. Now, what are the best RSS readers? I just got one called "RssReader" which has the advantage of being freeware, but I suspect is much simpler than most. Are there browsers with integrated RSS readers? One more question: I have a lot of rotting/rotted NYTimes links on my blog. How can I go fetch the RSS link to them? Posted by: Kevin Murphy at November 16, 2003 06:58 PM | PERMALINKThanks for the nice comments, everybody, and thank you, Kevin, for helping this info get out more widely where it can do some good. Kevin M: on RSS aggregators (sometimes called "RSS newsreaders"): There are a number of good RSS aggregators. Bloglines and Amphetadesk can show you all new posts from your favorite weblogs on a single page in a browser; if you'd like to slice n' dice your big weblog reading list into lots of categories like I do, you might like Feeddemon. A thought on how to fix your already-rotted links: I don't think there's an automated way to fix them all at once unless you are willing to write a program to do so, but there probably is a way you can find the links to the RSS versions of the articles. Try Feedster, which is a search engine exclusively for data in the RSS format (often called a "feed", hence the name). For those of you who have your own weblog and publish an RSS feed, Feedster also has a "search my site" service that you can embed into your site. This may be nicer than using similar services from Google or Amazon, because each time your blog puts out an RSS update, the index of stuff that is searched when a user enters a search query is always up to date. With Google or Atomz you either have to wait for Google to crawl you again, or tell Atomz to crawl your site to rebuild the index of searchable stuff.
Oops -- "Amazon" should read "Atomz" above. Posted by: Lisa Williams at November 16, 2003 07:19 PM | PERMALINKNote, however, that CNN does delete some news articles. For example, this link used to go to an article posted on 1 Oct 03 named "Global Warming Said to Kill 160,000 a Year". The link no longer goes anywhere, and a search of CNN's site shows that it no longer exists anywhere else on the site. I've noticed this on several other occasions as well. Original URL: http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/science/10/01/warming.deaths.reut/index.html Posted by: flawdlogic at November 16, 2003 08:31 PM | PERMALINKI am confused. Please configure your e-mail client with the following details to complete the setup: Won't this effect the transimission and reception of my personal email? Or should I go to my blogger administration page and and somewhow fiddle with it's settings? There is also a link to the Radio UserLand site, which indicates that there is a dedicated web feed agreement was between Radio UserLand and the NYT. Is Radio UserLand a News Aggregator? Is it the only one that provides the RSS URL's to the NYT articles? TO take advantage of that do you have to buy the Radio UserLand web log content managament software? Am I dumb, or just over-complicating things? Over to you, world wide web. Posted by: Jack Strocchi at November 16, 2003 10:47 PM | PERMALINK Well, garbage in, garbage out. I think I'll postpone that "always-on" internet connection and keep gathering news the old way. I knew Judith Miller was full of s--t long before the editors of the Times did. Call it an informed guess. Posted by: serial catowner at November 17, 2003 05:45 AM | PERMALINKSmall correction, Kevin: Washington Post articles are available for two weeks; after that they're behind an archive wall. (Though it's pretty common to be able to find them still via Google after that, I always save the printer-friendly version of any WP store I might want to refer to later. LAT articles ditto, only I try to do that within a day of their appearance -- LAT is harsh about sweeping them away... Posted by: Nell Lancaster at November 17, 2003 06:38 AM | PERMALINKAmong Canadian media, the Globe and Mail, which you link, seems to keep permanent free available archives, but those are not searchable beyond about a week. The CBC's (cbc.ca) archive is fully searchable and free. Posted by: Don at November 17, 2003 10:52 AM | PERMALINKOF course, to no one's surprise, Fox News is hell. Posted by: Alex Mudd at November 17, 2003 12:29 PM | PERMALINKMaybe I'm missing something, but the NYT homepage feeds I get via Bloglines from Userland don't seem to contain the special magic in the URL to tag it as a Userland partner type. I get the usual: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/17/politics/17CND-MEDI.html Posted by: Joost Schuur at November 17, 2003 01:17 PM | PERMALINKThe New York Times Link Generator will convert a NY Times URL into a permanent USERLAND-branded URL. Posted by: jkottke at November 17, 2003 01:51 PM | PERMALINKJack, I have to say I've never used an aggregator that worked as part of my email program, so I'm not sure I can answer your question specifically. I'd be pretty wary of changing my email settings without knowing precisely what was going to happen, too. In general there are three kinds of aggregators -- ones that work as add-ons to your email program, ones that work as add-ons to your web browser, and ones that are standalone programs of their own. I use the third kind, a standalone program called FeedDemon. I've also had friends recommend two browser-based ones -- Bloglines and Amphetadesk. I realize you've now put the time into downloading and fiddling with one aggregator, but this is a new technology and it may provide you with better results to download and try one or two of the different "flavors." As far as your question regarding RSS links goes, I suspect that different aggregators treat links differently -- some will shuttle you directly to the HTML page while others will render an RSS page for you, so to you it looks like a different link, and you're not easily getting at the link you would like to cut and paste. If in doubt, I would use the NY Times link generator that Mr. Kottke so helpfully points to in his comment on this thread. Experiment, play, and patience, these are the keys to happiness with software and the internet ...someone please remind me of this when I am swearing at Quicken because I want it to work rather than "experiment" with it:) Posted by: Lisa Williams at November 18, 2003 05:06 AM | PERMALINKThis points out a need that's been crying for some time - we need a
weblog "town square", maybe analogous to metafilter, where issues like
this can be discussed & the info stored all in 1 place. Compulsory web registration irks me no end, so I resort to: http://bugmenot.com/view.php?url=www.nytimes.com Posted by: guybo at November 21, 2003 01:59 AM | PERMALINKThanks all, especially Kevin, Lisa, and Mr. Kottke, for this most useful information!
